Nexo Surfboards Shaper: Fernando Gutierrez / Mauricio Avila / Jean Pierre Stark
Year started shaping: 1991 / 1998 / 1981
What’s your shaping philosophy?
FG: Searching for the optimum.
MA: Mixing up different styles.
JP: The best board for any kind of surfer, in any kind of wave.
What led you to become a shaper?
FG: Curiosity and passion for craftsmanship.
MA: I didn’t want a 9-to-5. I love to ride my own boards and to see others ride them.
JP: It was love at first sight for me, for both surfing and surfboards.
What do you consider your expertise?
FG: I am a perfectionist, I will not stop until I think it is perfect.
MA: Mixing old and new school styles.
JP: High-performance surfboards.
How is your shaping influenced by your location?
FG: Living in the south of Spain is quite a challenge for a shaper. Perfect days are rare, but I really enjoy trying to make the best boards possible to get the most out of every session.
MA: Oceanside is Oceanside.
JP: France has the best beachbreaks in Europe, enough said.
What advice would you give to customers to help them get the best board possible?
Go see a shaper and talk to him, be honest about your skills and be willing to listen.
